About Laura Nelson

Laura Nelson thrives in the beautiful Rocky Mountain town of Fernie BC.,where lifestyle, community, and landscape create a powerful sense of place and provide endless inspiration for this visual artist. Her paintings celebrate the colour, rhythm, and energy of the outdoors, and reveal the intensity of her bond to these natural places. Laura is mostly a self taught artist, starting at an early age with pencil, charcoal, and pastel. She has been exploring with acrylic on canvas since 2003.

“I love to be out in it, mountain biking, hiking, skiing or just gardening. It is then that I am truly alive, and reminded of our essential connection to the earth. I’ve always been inspired and humbled by the transformative healing, even spiritual forces of mountains and forests. Painting enables me to explore this transformative magic through the process of my work. It provides balance to my busy life, forcing me to reflect, and pay homage to the incredible beauty I witness when outside.

I marvel at the infinite possibilities when starting a new painting, and the challenges that come in simplifying forms and creating a representation of something so alive. Each painting will slowly reveal itself and at some point take on a life of its own. The end result is always a surprise.”
